What is Gaia Green Fiber?

What is the difference between hemp bast fiber and hemp hurd?
They are the two fractions of the same stalk, and they serve completely different production lines.
Bast fiber is the long outer fiber running the length of the stalk. Tensile strength runs 550–900 MPa depending on retting method and processing grade. It goes into technical textiles, nonwovens, insulation batts, biocomposites, rope, and paper.
Hurd, also called shiv, is the woody inner core left after bast is separated. It is highly porous and absorbent, and it goes into hempcrete, animal bedding, biocomposite panels, molded packaging, industrial absorbents, and cellulosic feedstock.
One harvest yields both. Nothing is left over — which is the actual meaning of zero-waste in a fiber supply chain, as opposed to the marketing meaning.
How is hemp bast fiber processed and cut?
After harvest, stalks are retted to break down the pectin binding bast to hurd — either field retting, where microbial action does the work in place, or water retting, where submersion accelerates separation. Retted stalks then run through a decorticator, which fractures the stalk and separates the two fractions mechanically.
Bast is then cut to the specification your line needs:

Why is hemp hurd comparable to hardwood chips?
Because the chemistry is nearly the same, and most buyers do not realize it.
Hemp hurd is roughly 40–45% cellulose, 18–24% hemicellulose, and 22–28% lignin. That composition puts it directly alongside the hardwood chips already feeding pulp, paper, and biocomposite manufacturing. The difference is cycle time and yield. Hemp reaches harvest in 90–120 days. Timber takes decades. Per acre, hemp produces more usable cellulosic material.
What does hemp fiber replace in a production line?
Fiberglass in insulation. Hemp batt reaches R-3.5 per inch with no VOC off-gassing and no protective equipment required during installation. Wood pulp in paper and tissue. Hemp bast produces stronger paper with less processing, and yields roughly four times more fiber per acre than trees.
Hardwood chips in cellulosic feedstock. Same three components, comparable proportions, faster cycle.
Synthetic fiber in composites and technical textiles. At 550–900 MPa, hemp bast is a viable reinforcement fiber wherever weight reduction and biodegradability are design priorities — automotive interiors, nonwovens, engineered panels. Is US-grown hemp fiber tariff-free?
Yes. Hemp fiber grown and processed inside the United States is not subject to import tariffs. Competing natural fibers — jute, flax, and imported hemp — are. For a US manufacturer, domestic sourcing eliminates that exposure entirely. We walk through the landed-cost math in from farm to factory.

Does the November 2026 federal hemp law affect industrial fiber supply?
This is the question we get most often right now, and the answer is narrower than the headlines suggest.
The federal hemp redefinition taking effect on November 12, 2026 targets consumable cannabinoid products — THC content in finished goods intended for consumption. Industrial hemp grown for fiber, grain, and construction materials sits outside that scope.
Industrial hemp is harvested before flowering and processed for stalk fiber. Cannabinoid content is negligible by design, not by remediation. Every shipment we send includes a THC compliance certificate documenting sub-0.3% content.
For manufacturers, the practical read runs the other direction from what you might expect: as acreage and processing capacity move away from the cannabinoid market, fiber supply is where that capacity goes. Qualification now is cheaper than qualification in 2027.

Every delivery includes a certificate of analysis, farm origin documentation, moisture content data, fiber length distribution for the batch, a THC compliance certificate confirming sub-0.3% content, a product specification sheet, receipts, and a freight manifest with chain-of-custody reference numbers.
