HempCrete is a non-structural infill within a structural frame. It does not bear loads on its own. This is the single most common misunderstanding among builders specifying it for the first time.

How Do HempCrete and Rebar Work Together?

In a typical HempCrete building, a structural frame — timber, steel, or reinforced concrete — carries the loads. Rebar-reinforced concrete handles foundation, footings, slabs, and lintels, while HempCrete is packed into wall cavities as infill around the frame.

The Hemp Building Association documents this hybrid approach and provides technical guidance for integrating HempCrete with conventional structural systems. The result is structurally sound, highly insulated, vapor-permeable, and significantly lower in embodied carbon than an all-concrete structure.

What Is the R-Value of HempCrete?

HempCrete's R-value typically ranges from R-2 to R-2.5 per inch. Its real advantage is acting as insulation and thermal mass simultaneously — storing heat during the day and releasing it at night — which reduces overall energy demand rather than just slowing heat transfer.

Comparing that R-value directly against fiberglass or foam is misleading. Those materials resist conductive heat flow and nothing else. A HempCrete wall moderates temperature swings and manages moisture through the assembly, which is why measured in-use performance often outruns what the per-inch number predicts.

HempCrete or Hemp Batt Insulation: Which Do You Need?

These are different products from the same plant, and they are frequently confused.

HempCrete is hurd plus lime binder, mixed and cast or packed on site into a frame. Roughly R-2.5 per inch. It provides thermal mass, moisture regulation, and a monolithic wall with no cavities.

Hemp batt insulation is made from bast fiber, manufactured into flexible batts, and installed into stud bays like conventional insulation. Roughly R-3.5 per inch. It provides higher insulation value per inch and no thermal mass.

Retrofitting a conventional stud-framed building generally points to batt. New construction where you control the wall system and want moisture regulation and thermal mass points to HempCrete. Some projects use both.

Hemp Hurd vs. Hemp Bast Fiber: What's the Difference?

  • Hemp hurd — the woody inner core of the stalk. This is the ingredient in HempCrete. Also used in animal bedding, paper, particleboard, and biocomposite panels. Roughly 40–45% cellulose, 18–24% hemicellulose, and 22–28% lignin.
  • Hemp bast fiber — the long, strong outer fiber, with tensile strength of 550–900 MPa. Used in textiles, rope, technical composites, and batt insulation. It is not a component of HempCrete, though it is a co-product of the same harvest.

According to the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service, both hurd and bast fiber are commercially significant co-products of hemp processing, each with distinct industrial applications.

What Hurd Specification Does HempCrete Require?

This is where projects go wrong, and it is rarely discussed. Not all hurd is suitable for HempCrete. Five things determine whether a batch performs:

  • Particle size uniformity. Inconsistent sizing produces inconsistent density and unpredictable cure behavior across a wall.
  • Fines and dust content. Excess fines absorb binder disproportionately, driving up lime consumption and weakening the mix.
  • Bast fiber contamination. Residual long fiber in the hurd fraction interferes with packing and creates voids.
  • Moisture content. Wet hurd throws off your water-to-binder ratio before you have mixed anything.
  • Foreign material. Organic and inorganic debris from poor field handling shows up as failure points in a wall you cannot open later.

Ask any supplier for documented figures on all five before you order. If they cannot produce them, they are selling agricultural byproduct rather than a construction material.

How Long Does HempCrete Take to Cure?

Longer than most schedules assume. HempCrete cures by carbonation and drying, and the timeline depends on wall thickness, ambient humidity, temperature, and airflow. Plan for weeks before finishes go on, and longer in humid climates or thick walls.

Build the drying window into the schedule at the start. Rushing finishes onto an uncured wall traps moisture in an assembly specifically designed to breathe, and that is expensive to undo.
